North QLD macadamia growers and industry representatives are invited to a special AMS MacGroup in Mackay in September. The MacGroup will focus on macadamia production specific to the central and northern Queensland growing areas. Topics covered will include Integrated Pest & Disease Management, Orchard Management, Nutrition, Irrigation Scheduling, Production Analysis and Innovative Technology Changing Orchards. Key AMS representatives will be joined by a host of industry experts, including the world’s best macadamia researchers and consultants.
This is a must-attend event where you will have the opportunity to identify and understand the key opportunities on your orchard for the coming season, listen to informative presentations, ask questions, participate in group discussion and talk with other local growers.
The presentations will include information from both the data obtained from levy-funded projects as well as the practical experiences from commercial orchards.
There will also be a pre-event orchard tour and dinner (details below).
TOPICS
This MacGroup will focus on three key topics:
- Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM) Researchers from levy-funded projects focused on IPDM will discuss in detail a range of opportunities for you to improve your macadamia production and profitability with improved IPDM program for the upcoming season. This will include issues such as: Flowering diseases, Phytophthora, Fruit spotting bug, Macadamia seed weevil, Boring beetles, as well as Spray application technology, Monitoring tools, and critical timing.
- Orchard Management and Nutrition This presentation will cover the essential orchard establishment principles of site identification & selection, ground preparation & orchard design, advice on the best trees and varieties to suit your soil, climate and topography, planting and early tree care. It will also cover integrated orchard maintenance once trees are productive, including canopy management, orchard floor maintenance, drainage systems, harvesting efficiency, maintaining soil health and nutritional programs.
- Crop Management and Irrigation Scheduling Crop management researchers will discuss key macadamia phenological cycles and how to maintain tree health and crop production. They will be outlining the latest irrigation scheduling research, flush management options, innovative technology changing orchards including precision agricultural tools, tree shakers and environmental monitoring.

Pre-event orchard tour
AMS staff and researchers will be visiting a selection of local orchards throughout the day, where there will be discussion on the various issues and opportunities facing north QLD orchards and growers. Further details will be provided upon request.

Pre-MacGroup Dinner
