Cape Byron Distillery has been crowned at the very top of the Australian whisky scene, with its Mac. Liqueur Cask Single Malt Whisky taking out first place in a national blind tasting run by National Liquor News.
Matured in casks previously used for the distillery’s signature macadamia liqueur, the whisky scored an impressive 96 points, with judges praising its “stunning mouthfeel” and high-quality ingredients. This recognition highlights the premium qualities of macadamias as a flavour influence in high-end beverages, reinforcing their role in elevating innovative, value-added products.
“Stunning overall mouthfeel with high quality ingredients. A great whisky from start to finish appropriate for all occasions and customers.” – Imogen Murphy, Owner, Thirstville
Cape Byron describes the winning release as golden and indulgent, with notes of buttery macadamia, cocoa, and shortbread, finishing with a touch of oak spice.
A second release, the Serendipity Peated Single Malt Whisky, also shone, placing second overall with 95 points. The judging panel – made up of bartenders, retailers, and category buyers – compared whiskies from more than 20 Australian distilleries. Other whiskies in the Cape Byron range also received strong scores, cementing the distillery’s reputation as a leader in Australian craft whisky.
Located in the Byron Bay hinterland, the distillery continues to attract national attention for its craftsmanship and connection to its rainforest environment.
This recognition is not only a win for Cape Byron but also for the Australian macadamia industry. The Mac. Liqueur Cask whisky is a strong example of how macadamias bring depth, flavour, and a premium edge to food and beverage innovation, helping to position our industry for new opportunities in both local and international markets.
