Rodent control in macadamia orchards (David Elmouttie)

2018 | Australian Macadamia Society | Video

Dr David Elmouttie describes his research into controlling rats in macadamia orchards. Controlling rats is a multi pronged approach which includes habitat modification, reducing out of season food source, baiting etc. Bait station design and placement is important.

Integrated system key to rodent control in orchards

2018 | Elmouttie D | Article

Crop loss resulting from rodent damage is a big issue for the macadamia industry. Research has shown that the rat (Rattus rattus) is responsible for more than 95 per cent of all rodent damage in orchards and that there is a complex interaction between rats and the orchard system. Controlling this pest means taking a strategic approach, as described in the article.

Rat control: an integrated regional approach

2019 | Australian Macadamia Society, Elmouttie D | Fact Sheet

Rats are a major issue for the macadamia industry, with up to 30% of the crop being lost in some years. As our knowledge of orchard systems and rat behaviour has improved, strategies for their management have changed. It is important that growers develop and follow a rodent management program.

MC09027 Assessment of Rodent Foraging and Nut Damage in Densely Planted Australian Macadamia orchards.

2011 | Hamilton G | Research report/Update

This report describes a pilot project research carried out to examine the possibility that planting density in Australian macadamia orchards influences levels of rodent damage, to establish baseline rodent damage estimates in these systems, and to determine if further study of rodent damage in these production systems is needed.
