Pyrocal

Pyrocal is an Australian-owned engineering company designing and manufacturing industrial-scale biochar production systems using Continuous Carbonisation Technology.

Established in 2014, Pyrocal has invested heavily in research and development and today has one of the most advanced biochar production systems available globally, deploying systems in 8 countries. Australian-owned and operated and manufactured in Toowoomba, Pyrocal’s Continuous Carbonisation Technology (CCT) system transforms waste biomass (agriculture and forestry residues) and biosolids (sewage sludge) into biochar. Biochar is charcoal-like substance that has a wide range of benefits including improving soil structure, moisture retention and nutrient availability; immobilising heavy metals and organic pollutants such as PFAS; and storing carbon for hundreds of years. Pyrocal’s system is auto thermal, capable of operating 24/7 and has world-leading emissions control. The thermal energy is recovered from the hot flue gas, which can be used to provide process heat.

Pyrocal operates a full-scale demonstration and R&D facility at Wellcamp in South East Queensland utilising macadamia and pecan shells as feedstock. Due to macadamia shells high carbon content, it is a superior feedstock for creating a high-quality biochar and maximising carbon credits. Pyrocal's multidisciplinary team works collaboratively with clients to develop a business case that meets their objectives. In addition to delivering an effective solution to reduce waste, Pyrocal’s system provides clients with operational efficiencies and new revenue streams. It can also deliver brand value and help to achieve net zero targets
