Herbicides are one tool in orchard floor management, not a stand-alone solution.
Best results come from using them as part of an integrated program that
includes groundcover management, timing, and mechanical control.

The orchard floor is the engine room of any orchard. One of the best options for improving long-term orchard floor productivity and sustainability is to improve ground coverage. This fact sheet outlines the benefits of ground cover and considerations for management. Each growing region is different and a tailored solution for your orchard and the resources you have available will be required.
Healthy ground cover provides physical and biological benefits, maximises natural crop inputs and improves resilience.

With the summer storm season upon us, growers are urged to manage risks and minimise the negative effects of unpredictable weather events. But when an orchard sustains storm damage, how do you prioritise the clean-up and give damaged trees the best chance of recovering? Dr Chris Searle provides triage guidance for young and established orchards following severe weather, as well as preventative measures to mitigate damage.

Alloway Macadamias farm manager Johan Oosthuizen and Macadamias Australia Grower Liasion Rohan Orford show how horizontal grinding is assisting to produce a high quality double ground wood mulch from trees being removed in high density orchards. The horizontal grinding process helps to control mulch particle size and the resultant wood strands form a much better orchard floor surface and root growing environment than traditional wood chip from a tub grinder.

Lance runs Mill Farm in Nashua in the NSW Northern Rivers region with his wife, Ina. The farm’s productive acres are on very steep country, and over the years Lance has worked hard maximising ground cover and minimising erosion. Watch now to learn about the new machine developed by Lance, protecting ground cover and controlling pest.

The AMS Grower Toolkit - a practical, step-by-step production guide based on macadamia ecophysiology – will be launched at the industry conference AusMac2021 in November. One of its most crucial chapters - Orchard Floor Management – will be unveiled by Dr Chris Searle. Chris will explore the management principles that underpin the ‘working with nature rather than against it’ approach.
