Macadamia Integrated Orchard management support

North Coast Local Land Services are currently looking for macadamia producers in the Rous County Council who want to improve drainage, soil stabilisation and groundcover on their properties. In this project, landholders will receive an erosion management action plan and support in implementing drainage works on their properties.

Site managers will receive:

  • A detailed LiDAR property map showing features including drainage and water flow.
  • Modelled soil loss on farm under different placement of diversion and contour drains using RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation).
  • A tailored farm drainage and erosion management action plan (EMAP) from a specialist consultant, with farm specific management advice.
  • Potential to be part of a catchment scale program of works to implement priority farm drainage and soil stabilisation measures.

What are the benefits of implementing a farm drainage and erosion management plan?

Successful orchard drainage systems create a synergy between the orchard layout and the landscape, ensuring:

  • Minimal soil movement occurs during heavy rain, reducing nutrient loss.
  • Concentrated water flows are managed away from the bases of the tree, maintaining conditions for macadamia feeder roots.
  • Blocks are protected from run-on water and watercourses are stabilised, improving machinery access and harvest efficiency.
  • Areas with the worst erosion or tree health are prioritised, maximising value for money and impact on farm.
