The new 2025/26 Masterclass in Macadamia Management cohort recently gathered in Bundaberg for their first learning topic, Pest and Disease Management - an in-depth exploration of how integrated management practices build healthier, more resilient orchards.
Craig Maddox and Saleh Adnan (NSW DPIRD) discussed the key pest species across regions, highlighting the importance of accurate monitoring, correct identification and timely responses to protect yield and orchard health. Chris Fuller (Nutworks) and Chris Themsen (Agreco) demonstrated monitoring techniques and explained how balanced integrated pest management (IPM) programs support beneficial insects and overall orchard balance.
Dr Christopher Carr (Southern Cross University) shared new research showing that orchards with flowering inter-rows and reduced mowing support greater biodiversity, including higher numbers of beneficial insects and lower pest pressure.
Dr Femi Akinsanmi (UQ QAAFI) led a practical session on disease diagnostics and orchard hygiene, focusing on how early detection, prevention and proactive management can reduce yield losses and improve long-term orchard resilience.
The day concluded with a workshop hosted by Syngenta’s Rob Vitelli and Lachlan Ambridge, focusing on strategies to optimise crop protection and maximise efficiency in orchard management.
It was an excellent start to the 2025/26 Masterclass - combining science, experience and practical learning to strengthen orchard sustainability and productivity across the industry.
