Healthy Farms And Productive Macadamias

The day will focus on the economic benefits to macadamia production through managing for beneficial insects and other native species that function as pest predators. Growers will be shown practical ways to improve the habitat requirements for such species and local work investigating the value of native bees to production will be showcased.

This event will interest orchardists keen to explore natural ways to control pests whilst seeking increased nut-in-shell production, improving orchard value and integrating responsible orchard management practices.

Presenters will include:

Steve Maginnity (The Australian Native Bee Co) – Steve utilises native bees for education, pollination services and for conservation. He will feature his latest project working with growers to maximise productivity through improving foraging habitat for native bees on local orchards.

Leoni Kojetin (Aust. Macadamia Society) – Leoni is the Industry Development Manager at the Australian Macadamia Society. She is tasked with delivering the macadamia industry’s innovation and adoption program which aims to raise productivity through the implementation of research and development.

Jeremy Bright (NSW DPI) – Jeremy is the Macadamia Development Officer. He will talk about understanding pest lifecycles better and targeting approaches to pest control through biological, cultural and chemical methods.

Angus Underwood (Reconeco) – Angus is a wildlife ecologist and will demonstrate practical approaches to installing nesting boxes for owls and microbats and discuss the benefits these creatures provide in orchards.

Jacqui Paine (Basically Bush Restoration) – Jacqui operates a bush restoration business and can advise on best ways to convert degraded bushland to healthy habitat in ecologically functioning orchards.

Please note: The Field day will involve some walking on uneven ground. Long pants and sturdy walking shoes are recommended for safety.  Please bring a hat, water bottle and personal sun/insect protection.
