More than
200 growers attended a series of tree water relations events in Gympie,
Bundaberg, Northern Rivers and Clarence Valley with internationally acclaimed
tree water relations expert Theunis Smit from South Africa and Bundaberg’s Dr.
Dan Manson, a macadamia productivity improvement agronomist.
The course
was developed specifically for Australian macadamia growers and examined the
essential role of water management in macadamias in both dryland and irrigated
orchards.
Theunis and Dan summarised years of research and
practical experience for the event, and identified the key decisions growers need to make in order to set
up their orchard operations to capture as much rainfall as possible, as well as
how to identify water stress in a tree, how to increase environmental
monitoring, and how & when to irrigate on minimal water supply.
