From Orchard to Opportunity: Macadamia Growers Get Free Bulk Bag Recycling

Macadamia growers know: season after season, large bags pile up fast. Those woven fertiliser, seed, and supplement bags are essential, but what happens when they start to clutter your shed?

Big Bag Recovery is Australia’s free, government-accredited recycling program for large sacks and bulk bags over 15kg/L from participating brands. Instead of landfill, these bags get recycled into useful Australian-made products.

How to Join the Program: A Simple 3-Step Guide

  1. Check your bags: Look for the Big Bag Recovery logo or visit bigbagrecovery.com.au to see if your bags are eligible. Bags from program brands can be recycled free of charge.
  2. Find your nearest return point: Drop off your empty bags at one of many local collection sites across key macadamia regions, including Bundaberg, Bellingen, Elland, Townsend, Cherbourg, Paget, Atherton and more. For large volumes on-farm pickups can be discussed where appropriate.
  3. Drop off and done: No cleaning needed, just bundle and bring your bags or wait for collection. Simple and hassle-free.

What if my bags aren’t eligible? Non-program bags may attract a small fee and might not be recycled through this system. If unsure, contact the program team for guidance.

“We’ve seen many growers say recycling with Big Bag Recovery was easier than expected and cleared shed space while supporting local jobs,” says Shayna Jones, Product Stewardship Manager.

Every recycled bag helps reduce landfill and supports a circular economy. It’s an easy, practical step to show your commitment to sustainability and a cleaner community.
