Macadamia industry well represented at BAFFA Forum

The macadamia industry was well represented at the BAFFA (Bundaberg Ag-Food and Fibre Alliance) forum last week.

The public forum, hosted by the Hon Stephen Bennett, member for Burnett, brought together key decision-makers, industry leaders and influencers to explore pathways and methodologies to future-proof agriculture in Bundaberg region. It focused on key issues for Bundaberg’s agricultural sector including reef regulations, Paradise Dam and the ‘Right to Farm’.

World-renowned Great Barrier Reef scientist Dr Peter Ridd outlined the science that underpins his strong and compelling argument that the Bundaberg region should be excluded from reef regulation. The key points of Dr Ridd’s presentation can be found here.

Cameron Milliner, Sunwater’s Executive General Manager, provided an update on the dam’s status with a focus on rebuild economics and planning progress.

AMS CEO Clare Hamilton-Bate participated in the ‘Right to Farm’ panel alongside Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn, Solicitor Chris Cooper and BAFFA Director and local grower Peter McLennan.

The panel explored issues from ‘fit for purpose planning laws’ to ‘managing nuisance allegations’; the need for engagement of all sectors in the planning conversation, and for planned education / information were all discussed. The growth of the region and of the ag sector need collaborative coexistence and that intent was clear from panel discussions.

AMS is an associate member of BAFFA, working collaboratively to ensure a strong and united voice for primary production and producers in the Bundaberg region.
