Pest Control Programs Supporting Local Communities

Communities across 12 local government areas will be targeted in a range of incentive programs developed to improve invasive pest management while supporting local economies.

North Coast Local Land Services will implement these incentive programs in areas affected by the recent bushfires and in adjacent lands up to 50km from fire scars.

Funded by NSW Government’s Bushfire Recovery Stimulus package, activities will focus on Ballina, Bellingen, Byron Bay, Clarence Valley, Coffs Harbour, Kyogle, Lismore, Kempsey, Nambucca, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Richmond Valley and Tweed.

The program will include feral pig, wild dog, feral cat and wild deer control projects as outlined in the Regional Strategic Pest Animal Management Plan for the North Coast.  While works on Cane toad and Indian Myna will focus on incursion projects.

Team Leader Invasive Species Dean Chamberlain said “North Coast Local Land Service is looking for organisations or individuals who have the necessary skills and credentials to take part in invasive pest management. Including trapping and shooting on private and crown lands within their local area:

“The wild dog and wild deer control programs will involve local contractors managing these pests by trapping and shooting respectively. Whereas the feral pig program will focus on the use of a new control toxin, Hoggone, which specifically targets feral pigs” said Dean.

North Coast Local Land Services will provide all materials required for the projects and will provide the necessary training in baiting techniques for some pest species.
